Introduction External & European Affairs Lukas
This week I will be the fifth and last board member to introduced myself. My name is Lukas Vugts and I am External and European Affairs for AEGEE-Enschede. Curious about my story and how I ended up at AEGEE-Enschede? Read further here!
I was born on the 21st of April 1998 in Tilburg, the south of the Netherlands. Together with my lovely parents, two younger brothers and two Dalmatians, I grew up in Berkel-Enschot, a small village east of Tilburg. In the past, my brothers and I were always called the Three Musketeers, because we did everything together. Until my 18th birthday I played football at Jong-Brabant as a defender.
After eight years of primary school at Berkeloo, I went to the Sint-Odulphuslyceum. An old monastery converted into a high school where I obtained my Athenaeum diploma. My high school was located in the centre of Tilburg which meant I had to bike to and from school for 30 minutes every day.
After I completed high school I found it difficult to find a study and university. When I really couldn’t find anything I accidentally stumbled upon the University of Twente. According to my high school, no one ever went to Enschede, meaning I was the first. I went on to study Creative Technology at the UT, which suited me perfectly. Before the start of the Kick-In, I didn’t know anyone and had no idea what the student life was like. I joined a Pandemonium dogroup and liked AEGEE from the start.
After an amazing Kic-In and an enjoyable HAIP, I wanted to do more for the association. I then went on to joint he Computer Operating Team (COT), where I learned a lot what I could use for my study as well. At the end of November I formed my year club HJC Kurtiton, with whom I ate and drank every Tuesday. Unfortunately we broke up in the summer of 2017 because some of us went on to study abroad. Fortunately, I was part of COT and joined the Almanac committee so I was still actively involved with the association. During my work for the almanac committee the urge to do a board year became stronger and stronger and eventually lead to applying for a spot on the new Board.
Within the 33th Board of AEGEE-Enschede, I hold the functions External and European Affairs. As External Affairs I facilitate connections and collaborations with external partners. This means I can often visit the partners and drink a lot of free coffee. As European Affairs, I care for the European part of the European part of the association. Originally founded on April 16th, 1985, Association des États Généraux des Étudiants de l'Europe has grown into the network we know today. With a growing network of 160 locals, scattered across Europe, it provides a lot of opportunities. Twice a year the Agora takes place, the general assembly of AEGEE-Europe that takes place over multiple days. Three weeks ago, AEGEE-Enschede went to he Autumn Agora in Istanbul, where we as AEGEE-Enschede were represented with three delegates and four visitors. The European part provides more opportunities than I can mention so if you are interested you can always send me an email or approach me in the pub!
Despite the busy life as a board member, I still like to play football or go for a run sometimes. Furthermore, every Monday I attend a pubquiz with the AEGino’s at CP. I will soon be building my aquarium again which I’m really excited about. Last but not least, I have a wonderful sweet girlfriend with whom I love to go out dinner and do nice things.
See you on Tuesday!
Lukas Vugts
